Technology

Ultraviolet (UV)

Germicidal UV light that eliminates microorganisms without altering taste, colour or pH.

At a glance

What it removes

Bacteria, viruses and pathogens — up to 99.9999% (6-log reduction) of microorganisms.

Best for

Source water under 300 ppm TDS.

Key advantage

No chemicals, no moving parts, and no effect on the taste, colour or pH of water.

How It Works

The UV Process

  1. Water Inlet

    Water enters the UV chamber.

  2. Quartz Sleeve

Protects the lamp while allowing UV light to pass through.

  3. UV Exposure

Germicidal UV-C light at ~250 nm penetrates microorganisms.

  4. DNA Disruption

UV scrambles DNA and RNA, preventing reproduction.

  5. Safe Water Out

    Microbiologically safe water, chemically unchanged.

Overview

The UV Lamp

Ultraviolet radiation is emitted by very low pressure mercury vapour lamps, with a power rating up to 200 watts and an average lamp life between 7,000 and 8,000 hours. The wavelengths lie in the 200-300 nm range, with maximum microbicidal action around 250 nm.

How UV Sterilisation Works

UV sterilisation — also known as ultraviolet germicidal irradiation — works by breaking down chemical bonds and scrambling the structure of DNA, RNA and proteins, leaving microorganisms unable to multiply.

Why UV

Advantages of UV

Eliminates 99.9% of Microorganisms

Correctly sized systems destroy up to 99.9999% (6-log reduction) of microorganisms including viruses and pathogens.

No Internally Moving Parts

Self-contained systems with a replaceable UV lamp mean less wear and lower maintenance.

Compact Systems

UV technology is compact and non-intrusive, and can often be retrofitted to existing treatment systems.

Does Not Affect Colour or Taste

No effect on pH, taste, colour or smell, and nothing is added to the water.

No Chemicals

No chlorine or biocides required, meaning a safer working environment and fewer ongoing supply costs.

Flexible UV Intensity

Disinfection dose is determined by UV intensity, not system size; system size determines flow rate.

Excellent Efficiency

With a strong enough UV-C source, water can be completely disinfected in a single cycle.
